International Summer School

“Southwest Asian Horizons: A Summer School on Regional Politics and Diplomacy”

Program Overview

Southwest Asia encompassing Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and extending to neighboring regions in South and Central Asia stands at the crossroads of profound geopolitical transformations. This area is shaped by intricate historical legacies, ethnic and cultural interconnections, persistent security dilemmas, resource dynamics, and evolving patterns of regional and global influence. In recent years, shifts such as the post-2021 changes in Afghanistan, great-power competition, climate vulnerabilities, migration pressures, and emerging economic corridors have intensified the need for deeper understanding of regional politics and diplomacy.

The region faces intersecting challenges: cross-border security threats, economic integration efforts amid geopolitical flux, environmental degradation, youth radicalization, and the interplay of state and non-state actors. At the same time, it offers significant opportunities for sustainable development, diplomatic innovation, inclusive governance, and resilient connectivity. Traditional state-centric approaches often overlook the lived realities of local communities, youth perspectives, and non-traditional security dimensions.

This summer school seeks to address these gaps by providing an intensive, immersive learning experience that bridges theory and practice. It aims to equip emerging scholars, students, young professionals, and practitioners with critical analytical tools, diplomatic skills, and regional insights to navigate Southwest Asia’s complex political landscape. The program will combine academic rigor with practical engagement, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and promoting critical thinking on inclusive governance and youth empowerment.
